Plant and fleet is a significant internal business of any Council and is critical to the overall productivity of the organisation. The South Burnett Regional Council’s (SBRC) fleet had aged to a point where it was necessary to develop and implement a Plant & Fleet Improvement Plan to ensure that support services could operate to an optimum level.
GenEng were engaged to assess the plant and fleet operations from strategic, management and operational perspectives and identify areas of the plant and fleet unit which were performing well, areas that required improvements, and tools required to achieve those improvements.
A following stage of the improvement to the fleet operations was the updating of the asset management plan and the reporting on fleet operations.
Approach
A Health Check was carried out in conjunction with fleet supervisors on the existing Plant and Fleet service which included workshops with operational areas of council being the customers of the service. This approach identified areas of fleet demand, utilisation, revenue, asset management and governance arrangements. The performance of the fleet operation focussing on custodian use and reporting and the workshop response was also included in the review. An improvement plan was prepared for implementation over time.
Outcome
The Fleet Review provided Council with a critical heath check on the existing operations and an improvement plan to support the improved performance of the fleet operations. Implementation of the improvement plan will ultimately reduce operational costs and improve organisational productivity.
